Deer Butchering Shop

Opening a Deer Butchering Shop

If you’re thinking about opening your own deer butchering shop, you’re going to need a number of different things. This includes a building to base your shop out of, a number of different slicers and cutters, and many different common business equipment.

The Building

First, you’ll need a place to operate your shop out of. Some people do try to operate out of their house, but if you’re serious about operating your own deer butchering shop, you’ll need a much larger space. One of the best options is to get a metal building. These buildings can be quickly and easily constructed just about anywhere. All you need is a level place for your foundation. A metal building with a cement foundation is also ideal for something like a butchering shop because you will want to make certain that the building is cleaned often, and wood can be more difficult. You’ll want to make certain that you have a good amount of electrical outlets in your building, since you will need to have at least one large freezer on hand. If you really plan on butchering deer for a number of people and not simply for yourself, you’ll need multiple freezers. In addition to having electricity ran to your metal hut, you’ll also want to have plumbing hooked up so you can have a working sink.

The Equipment

Butchering deer or any other type of animal for meat requires a number of different pieces of equipment. You will need to have a skinning knife and a boning knife to start. You’ll also probably want an electric meat slicer, a jerky slicer, a tenderizer, a dehydrator, a grinder, and a scale for measuring how much meat goes into each package. All of this equipment cost will add up, of course, so you may want to start off small if you have a limited budget.

Will you Advertise?

Some people build a deer butchering shop mainly to butcher the deer they and their friends hunt, but others make it into a side business or even go full time. If you’re going to do either of those, you’ll need to do some research into the laws governing businesses in your state, and you’ll need to learn about sales tax and everything that is involved in filing a business tax return. You may also need to learn about marketing and how to properly advertise your business online. It’s possible that you’ll be able to make a living off of your butcher shop if you have the right building, right equipment, and understand how to run a business.
