Building Maintenance

One of the best things about steel buildings is how little maintenance is required thanks to how durable it is. With the right protective coatings and paints, your steel building can last for years and years without having to be repaired on a regular basis. Here are just a few of the ways you can make sure your building stays in good shape!

Inspect Your Steel Building

No matter how durable, extreme weather can be hard on any building. Heavy snowfall can sometimes cause damage to steel roofs, so it’s imperative that you check for any potential punctures, holes, leaks or other compromises that might have occurred. Check the whole building because once the seasons transition over to the rainy-ness of spring, it could be a disaster. Check around doors and windows specifically to make sure all the sealants & weather stripping are in good shape.

Double check to make sure the building’s insulation isn’t wet or in any way damaged, since damaged insulation can cause higher heating and cooling costs since the appliances will expend more energy trying to regulate the temperature. Wet insulation can cause mold and mildew to form, which is a health hazard for anyone who uses the inside of the building a lot. Animals too!

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the building’s paint and outside coatings and finishes to make sure everything is in working order. Damage to a metal building’s exterior might not be likely, but it can still happen so make sure you inspect both the interior and the exterior. I

Repair Any Damages

As soon as you locate any type of damage on your building – fix it right away. Issues tend to only worsen the more you ignore it, and it will end up being even more expensive to fix later on down the road. If you do any repairs, make sure you keep any record of it for the future, as they can let you know what’s been done and showing proof to government regulatory bodies and insurance companies.

Water is by far the biggest threat to your steel building, whether liquid or frozen or vaporized.. Moisture of any kind can cause mold, warping and all around compromising of your steel building if you’re not careful, and any sustained damaged needs to be fixed immediately.

Clean Your Steel Structure

This might seem obvious to some but for others they might not consider the fact that they need to keep the building relatively clean and the ways this can help extend the life of your structure even more. Power Wash your building on a low setting in order to remove the dirt, grime and debris that would accumulate; and try to do this on an annual basis. Removing this dirt prevents stains and helps your building to stay looking its best. For particularly tough stains, use a soft brush and some elbow grease! You can even add laundry soap to help it get even cleaner.

Make sure you removed any furniture from outside your structure, close all the doors and windows and protect any electrical components outside before blasting the building with water.
